Map of Mindanao

Between 1976 and 1998, I undertook seven research trips to the Philippines to study the music of the mountain people living on the southern island of Mindanao. Most of the time I spent with the Binukid-speaking minority groups, namely with the Bukidnon and Talaandig in Bukidnon province, the Higaunen in Misamis Oriental and the Banuwaen in Agusan del Sur. In 1993, I also visited the linguistically and culturally related Matigsalug and Tigwa Manobo in southern Bukidnon. During winter 1997/98, I made a round trip to several areas of Mindanao where I documented the music of the traditional boat-shaped lutes among the Blaan, Tboli, Matigsalug, Ata and Obo Manobo, Mandaya, Magindanaon and Talaandig. However, these are not the only areas where boat lutes can be found: I am still planning to visit the cultural communities of the Maranao, Subanen, Cotabato Manobo, Tiruray, Tagakaulu (Kalagan), Mansaka and Mamanwa of Mindanao, as well as of the Palawano, Tagbanwa and Batak on the island of Palawan. Well, certainly enough projects for many more trips... (Some Internet surfers have already expressed their interest in a map showing the exact locations where I did my research. I will try to provide a detailed map, but this certainly will take some time because, in many cases, it is hardly possible to verify the exact locations of settlements.)

During my research trips, I took about 4,400 photographs, most of them documenting musical activities, like dancing or the building and playing of musical instruments. But, caught by a mixture of enchantment and disillusion, I also made a lot of shots merely because I was fascinated by the sights and motifs. I was impressed by the people and their culture as well as by their natural environment, the mountains and the forests.

I always wanted to make an exhibition with my photographs. It would have been especially interesting to exhibit in the Philippines, and I also thought of making a book or a CD-ROM with these pictures. But I was always busy with other things. Nevertheless, a small selection was exhibited at an adult educational center run by the Senate of Berlin for the period of two years but only a few people must actually have seen them there. When I finally got involved in Internet affairs, I considered this the appropriate forum to reach a wider public. So, there it is: a selection of 90 photographs as well as an animated sequence of six pictures. I will add some more in the future.

Apart from a few exceptions, all photographs presented here were taken on the island of Mindanao, in the southern Philippines. And those few that were from other regions of the Philippines are so general, regarding their motifs, that they also could have been made anywhere in Mindanao. The photographs are ordered under the following headings:
