The Music of Johann Karl Brandeis

Lieder” (“Songs”)

On this site, there are seven samples of German Lieder composed
by Johann Karl Brandeis between 1934 and 1961 representing very different styles:
the first two, from 1934, represent his earliest attempts in song writing, one in a folk song/operetta
style, the other one in a kind of Russian folk song style
, nos. 3-4, in a late romantic style,
show some similarities to the Lieder composed by Richard Strauss,
while nos. 5-7 are more chromatic and atonal in nature.

Performers:

Hans Brandeis, tenor (son of the composer)
Lothar A. Runze, piano (Nos. 1-2)
Peter Porticos, piano (Nos. 3-7)

Recorded live during Lieder recitals:
Nos. 1-2 at Alte Feuerwache Zehlendorf, Berlin,
on March 21, 2003
Nos. 3-4 at St. Elisabeth Church, Berlin, on May 20, 2000
Nos. 5-7 at Fritzlar-Homberg School, Berlin, on June 6, 2002
